New look at old philosophical chesnuts
2014年7月29日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
This is a pretty interesting way to look at some of Philosophy's most meaningful questions. The author, an English philosopher of considerable reputation, focuses on the questions themselves, not the philosopher or school of thought behind them. Unlike Aristotle, Augustine or any of the more metaphysically oriented thinkers, Ayer presents a modern day, common sense point of view to philosophy's most basic questions (citing Bertrand Russell, E.G. Moore, Wittgenstein). It is also safe to say Mr. Ayer has an opinion about every single one of them. The late Mr. Ayer even has opinions about his own contribution to philosophy, which is a "verification principle" based on tautological and empirical truths (he is still the public face of Logical Positivism, although it dates back to Hume).
I personally think Ayer is every bit as brilliant as Bertrand Russell, but his writing lacks the clarity of Russell's. Too bad, because Language, Truth & Logic (his first book) was the most impactful philosophy book I ever read. Although, I can't say as I remember taking it along to read at the beach...

Organization and style is not the best

As part of my ongoing self-education in philosophy, I was hoping for a clear review of what, indeed, the central philosophical questions are, something akin to Russell's comparable monograph. Yet I found this work much wanting and could not force myself to get even half-way through it.
In this book (and his Very Brief Intro on Hume), Ayer has the annoying habit of mixing and scattering a partial review of a topic (a central issue, a philosopher's theory) with his or other's criticisms of that topic. As a result, there never seems to be a clear and concise of either the issue/theory and/or the criticisms. For philosophy specialists, this may not be a problem, but for everyone else, I'm not optimistic.
For this book, there was no introductory statement as to what the central "questions" are, much less why they are central. The chapter headings suggest the issues, but are not in the form of a "question". One is left wondering what those central questions in fact are.
I have no doubt that Ayer was very learned in matters philosophical, and with work, lessons from this book can no doubt be extracted, but the eventual gain does not seem to justify the labor required. I would recommend going to Russell's work instead.
