Written around AD 1200 by an unnamed Icelandic author, the Orkneyinga Saga is an intriguing fusion of myth, legend and history. The only medieval chronicle to have Orkney as the central place of action, it tells of an era when the islands were still part of the Viking world, beginning with their conquest by the kings of Norway in the ninth century. The saga describes the subsequent history of the Earldom of Orkney and the adventures of great Norsemen such as Sigurd the Powerful, St Magnus the Martyr and Hrolf, the conqueror of Normandy. Savagely powerful and poetic, this is a fascinating depiction of an age of brutal battles, murder, sorcery and bitter family feuds.

Seeing knowledge of how the Norwegians became the earls of Orkney and for how long
2019年7月23日にカナダでレビュー済みAmazonで購入
I'm not far into it (older language, but still readable) but find it very interesting especially when it is mentioned that the Norwegians actually ruled Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, large portions of England, several Islands north of the Scottish mainland, but not attached making it sensible to bring them into the "fold" so to speak. Our family genealogy is virtually rattling off our computers (my daughter and mine). It's no wonder we were born mostly dark skin, hair, and deep brown eyes, while another member was born with blonde or red hair and blue eyes, and the rest probably mixed. Some were born with green eyes and red hair. And this quick relay just involves seven generations, others not recorded yet, just photos. And I've just begun the book! I first stumbled on an ancient book at university in the special old books when I was working there. Don't consider it to be any joking, it is sad, happy, jovial, and perhaps a bit different from what is after all only by generations before and folklore mixed in. And I'm just getting started! This obviously has some of the original saga reworded to make reading easier. The saga itself is interesting historically. I am so happy to read it. And just to throw a curve, this Welsh-Orcadian married a Swedish-Norwegian in 1963.

A typical viking saga

This is a viking saga of the earls ( better said it in old norse Jarl) of the far north of Scotland. You can find many characters with theirs deeds will lead you in the passion and brutality of the early middleage.

A little known classic

With a very focused story of the Orkney islands in the great Scandinavian tradition, this book is fascinating. Reads from sweeping to detailed like many sagas, but a excellent insight into the Norse history and culture of Scotland's fringe islands and coasts. Also interesting comments on other historical happenings nearby. A treasure!
