Written about the high school sophomore level. I would probably have liked this in 1960. But the shallowness of the characters and the plot just don't engage me now.

A vast generation ship hurtles away from a violent, troubled Earth to settle on a distant planet orbiting an alien star. Those who set out on this journey are long-since dead. Those who will arrive at their destination have yet to be born. For those who must live and die in the cold emptiness between the stars, there is only the claustrophobic permanence of non-being. Life lived in unending stasis. Then the unthinkable happens: two souls - Auguste and Celeste - rebel. And from the fruit of their rebellion comes a new and powerful force which will take charge of the ship's destiny. "Journey into Space" is science fiction at its most classic and beguiling: timeless, vast in scope and daring in execution.

5つ星のうち4.0 Good start , difficult middle , very interesting end..
フォーマット: ペーパーバックAmazonで購入Well up front in this one - this is a strange book, predictable in that ark/generation ships get a predictable going over as humans over a period of time and generations seem to develop some very strange ideas
The basic premise is that Earth sends our 4 ark ships in cluding the Armenia and the crew is not in stasis so you have a crew that is motivated towards 'the mission' even though, for the 2nd generation crew the 'mission is all they will know and so have no emotional anchor to Earth.
There are two main characters who have what seems to be a special needs child who ends up as captain and the crew heads for a few years of compelte bebuachery which via a a twist of obsession with writing leads to a celebate religious cult - and all this in just 240 pages
The breakdown in the ship and the mission is made complete when Earth manages to blow themselves up (great reference to Planet of the Apes in there as well..) and the ships crew decides to return to Earth
..and then flys the ship into the Earth to destroy the last remaining , mutated survivors.
The only light in the gloom is that two of the crew decide to escape the fireball , and end up dying in orbit of the Earth but having preserved their story for the other ships that come back
The book fair cracks along and feels similar to 2001 in terms of action but is ultimately very disturbing because he shows that free of the constraints of Earth society nothing ends up as taboo and norms get removed - which makes you wonder if/when we finally develop this sort of technology what will we end up sending to the stars?

5つ星のうち3.0 Big epic…interesting approach to morale issues…not really sci-fi
Amazonで購入It is an epic that spans over a few generations. The only likeable characters August and Celeste (the Romeo and Juliet) are in the first generation so don’t last the whole book. Something in the book dies when they die.
The events/relationships on the ship at times are described in a very unemotional, matter of fact monologue, much like you would get with a narrator while watching a tv documentary on Auschwitz. Not sure if this was intentional or not. It is fairly easy to read, though keeping up with the cousins, nephews etc was a little challenging at times but didn’t affect the following of the story.
The book does approach a couple of moral dilemmas; namely that of religion with the massive problems it can cause. Also, perhaps a bit more on the controversial side, how older people can adversely interfere with good looking young people and their personal life’s. The older people doing this simply because they want to, they can and feel they have a right to do so.
For those thinking of buying this book for the sci-fi space journey perspective then I would think twice. The book is barely about space or anything sci-fi. The story could be just the same if it was some big building that no one was allowed to enter or leave on planet earth.

5つ星のうち3.0 Fun with extinction
フォーマット: ペーパーバックAmazonで購入This is a well-crafted book with evocative prose and nicely-rounded characters. Litt's style is unobtrusive and yet distinct in its lucidity. Together these factors make Journey Into Space an interesting, if somewhat dissatisfying, read. The main letdown is that the story covers too much ground in too few pages. Several generations pass during the course of the novel and in each case just as we start to become involved with the characters they're sidelined in favour of the next generation. In order for the story arc to reach completion this progression is necessary, but the rapidity with which it occurs lead to disappointment for this reader. I don't like to appear too critical of this novel as it's really quite good. Litt is a talented writer. This work, however, required more development than he appears to have been able to commit to. A doorstop novel was needed here, or maybe a short series, but either approach would have required Litt to examine his society in much greater depth. Perhaps he didn't have the will to do this. It's a shame: it could have been so much more.

5つ星のうち1.0 Journey Into Space
フォーマット: ペーパーバックAmazonで購入I persevered with this book but it was a tedious read. Whats up with the current crop of sci fi writers ? Their "Big Brother/X-Factor" shallow style of writing is becoming the norm. This book rambles on for what seems forever as one of the key characters describes weather, grass, and just about every other experience and the other charcater does the same back. Its boring and ridiculous. I got the point after the first experience sharing session between them. There was no need to keep labouring for what really did seem most of the book. But is actually about half of it. Ridiculous. Then it all accelerated as they got older and everything seemed to happen in the last few chapters.
This book is an almost exact copy...in both ideas and plot to James Follett's "Earth Search" series, only without the imagination and story telling. Pathetic and for the first time I can remember I threw it in the recycling bin after ...with a sigh of relief, finishing it.
