Though everything included in this volume can be found in the Collected Prose of Auden, also edited by Edward Mendelson, the price of this earlier selected collection is much more reasonable, as well as including most of the very best of Auden's critical reviews.
Auden was a genius, "the most intelligent man I ever met" was the verdict of Golo Mann, Thomas's son, and Robert Craft was almost equally impressed by the unpressed poet's amazing intellect, even though he was clearly destroying it with a combination of Lucky Strikes, barbiturates, and innumerable vodka martinis.
Auden's estimates are almost always reliable in the sense that he never praises a book too little or too much. He does come a cropper occasionally, arguing for example that Robert Gutman's book on Wagner is a welcome addition to the literature on that infamous genius, when in fact Gutman is dead wrong about MEISTERSINGER as an anti-Semitic screed and dubious on other matters.
Buy this book if you're not familiar with Auden's approach to lit crit and reviewing. If you like it as much as I do, you'll probably want to acquire the Collected Prose, though be prepared to fork out two hundred dollars to do so.

A Visit with an old friend with a snifter of brandy by the fireside
2013年12月30日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
I first read this compendium some 25 years ago, and, like the brandy suggested these essays just get warmer and better with time. Auden is a generalist whose command of the language and range of interest in great thoughts and great writers makes one want to pursue the works of the authors in the original and in its entirety. Though not yet available for Kindle there is hope that it will be issued in that format.

Every piece is interesting

I bought this book specifically for the essay on Shakespeare's sonnets, but find the other pieces just as interesting. Auden is so down to earth in all his remarks about writers and literature. Knowledgable and observant, of course, and unpretentious.

A decent purchase
2013年8月22日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
Auden is known as a poet for good reason - he was more prolific in poetry, and he was better. That being said, he was an excellent essayist, but do not expect the same calibre as that of his poetry. This specific copy I received was quite old, and the dust cover was quite tattered. The readability was not affected.
