著者について

Herman Melville (1819-1891) sailed as an ordinary seaman in the Pacific as a young man, turning these experiences into a series of romances that launched his literary career. By 1850 he was married, had acquired a farm near Pittsfield, Massachussetts, and was hard at work on his masterpiece Moby-Dick. Literary success soon faded, his complexity increasingly alienating readers. After a visit to the Holy Land in January 1857, he turned from writing prose fiction to poetry. In 1863, during the Civil War, he moved back to New York City, where from 1866-1885 he was a deputy inspector in the Custom House, and where, in 1891, he died. A draft of a final prose work, Billy Budd, Sailor, was left unfinished and unknown until its rediscovery and publication in 1924.

I read part of Moby Dick a long time ago, and didn't love it, never finished it. But on the recommendation of a friend I gave it another try, and I can see now why so many people count this as the best work of prose ever created. Virtually every chapter is dripping with imagery, here and there sprinkled with ideas that you can sit and ponder about and come off feeling enlightened. For example the sermon in chapter nine, or the description of Moby Dick himself in chapter forty-one. Much better experience the second time around. I would compare it to reading Isaiah in the Old Testament, once you can wrap your head around what is being said, and are willing to be patient, the book becomes a fountain that you emphatically want to come back to.

I have yet to read Redburn or White-Jacket. But Melville's style stayed even somewhat the same throughout his writing, I have a feeling I will at least enjoy the other two.

I collapsed forty years ago when I tried to read this book. What a poor sap I was. Now that I've grown up, I was ready for this best of all possible American books. It's a novel, theater, nonfiction, autobiography, comedy, tragedy, and epic. And I was amazed to find so modern a sensibility and approach to life; I would say it's existential, spiritual, casual, comic, and straight drama all in one. Of course one needs patience and sometimes needs to rush by massively in-depth encyclopedic content. That's okay. All readers of Moby Dick, as with all great books, will be changed and enriched, and will gaze at the ocean with different eyes. The whale, too, will never be the same for you. Its majesty and all-powerful essence and glory will never leave you.

Wonderful edition of Melville's books about the sea

This book contains Melville's most important works about the sea: "Redburn", "White-Jacket", and (of course) "Moby-Dick". This is a wonderful edition of these works. The texts used are the authoritative Northwestern-Newberry versions. These versions were proof-read by Melville scholars for any errors that may have crept into older printings. Thus, you can enjoy "Moby-Dick" pretty much exactly as Melville intended you to do. This edition also features a notes section at the back, which helps the reader understand some of the obscure references and allusions that Melville often makes. Overall, I would say that this book is definitely worth the price. It will look nice in any library - and it is perfect for reading and enjoying the works of a literary master!
